Periods, Commas but not Colons

After reviewing my Rhetorical essay I realized that I wasnt sure whether to put the periods, or commas inside or outside of the quotation. I did some research and according to the University of Purdue's writing lab you put both commas, and periods inside the quotations unless you have a parenthetical reference that follows then you place the period or comma on the outside. You place semicolons, and colons on the outside, and only include question marks, or exclamation points if they are apart of the original quote otherwise you just put them on the outside of the quotation.
