Who Needs Education

While reading an "Idiot Nation" I found Mr. Moore to be rather hypocritical and negative. He found a problem with everything and everyone, and never offered a solution. Not to mention that his whole essay was about how America should put more emphasis on education and he himself dropped out, but I guess that is because he is smart enough to go without. He also talks about how we should respect teachers, and he goes and gets his principle and assistant principle fired, or has them resign. I find him more of an entertainer than anything else.
He does bring out some good points that make me wonder why the government doesn't put more time, and money into the educational system. If they don't put a lot of time and money into the education system it makes me wonder if education is really needed because it sounds like those who have it dont really take advantage of it and those that dont still are able to find work, might not be great work, but work non the less. I had a teacher once tell us that schools should make it optional to all ages that way those who want to learn can, and those who don't, won't disturb those who do.
I think the biggest problem with the educational system is that students aren't motivated, and have very little desire to go to school. The best teacher can not make the worst student learn, but the best student can always learn something from the worst teacher. It just shows that it is on the students part to go out an learn. It isn't the teachers fault if the kid doesn't want to learn but you can't force them to learn. The government could improve the educational system if they would put more time into it. They could easily take surveys of ways to improve schools, and how to make students more involved and excited about school.
I really found the last bit about businesses and them funding schools very interesting. When I look back at my high school years I start to realize all of the coke machines among many other advertising techniques used. That is just crazy.

  1. I really like what you said, Chance, about the best teacher can't make the worst student learn but the best student can learn from the worst teacher. I don't know if you heard that somewhere or made it up, but it's quite profound. I'm going to have to think about that a little more.

Back in the OLDEN days when I went to school there was no way we'd've had vending machines in the schools. Interesting how things change and what motivates the shift in values. I suppose Mr. Moore's point is that if the government took a greater interest in, and allocated more money for, the educational system, they wouldn't have to try to fund raise by advertising, eh?

  3. hello, i agree that Michael Moore is a negative and hypocritical. I think it is easy to look at the negative side of everything. He brought out some interesting facts. They made me think a little. That is good because i don't do that very often.

  4. I really liked what you said all about how he had a problem with everyone. It seemed to me like all he did was complain on everyone else he needs to realize people are human we all make mistakes. We all need to just look inside and fix whatever we need to fix to make ourselves better rather than complain.

  5. I also agree that Mr. Moore is somewhat of an entertainer and less of a problem solver. However we do need people to raise question to be able to find answers. Maybe his point is not to fix the world around him but to explore it and raise questions. Also I think there is a lot to be said about Necessary evils. I think that although students may not want to learn it is in everyone’s best interest to try to teach them. This could be one of life’s Necessary evils. For example I hated reading as a child I found it difficult and not worth my time. Had I had the choice I would have dropped out of school. Maybe I would have never learned to read. This would be bad not only for me but for society as a whole because I would not be able to use a major form of communication within our society. I think it would be a bit naive to assume that because someone may not want to learn at a point in their life that they might always feel that way. That’s one of life’s beauties that we are always able to transform and move forward. I’m glad I was pushed through school; later on I really enjoyed college. Maybe what we all need to remember (including Mr. Moore) is that life is full of these Necessary evils, things that might not be the most fun or the easiest but things that are good for us and good for society as a whole. I guess what it all means to me is that life is not fair, people are not perfect. What makes some people believe that our society could or should run on and within a perfect system? I don’t believe that anyone would even know how to make a perfect education system that would work for every single person. But I do believe that there are many people out there doing the best they can with what they have. That’s America to me. If we want to make things better we have to go out and do it ourselves. We must always remember our definition of better may not match the definition of someone else’s better.
